1. 除極個別的介詞(如 except, but, in等)外，一般的介詞之后均不能直接接 that 從句。如要接，通常的做法是，借助 the fact that 這一結構。如：

She remembered nothing (about him) except that he livesin Paris. 她(對他)什么都不記得，只記得他住在巴黎。

法官根本不理會她剛剛失去丈夫這事實。

誤：The judge paid no attention to that she had just lost her husband.

正：The judge paid no attention to the fact that she had just lost her husband.

2. 為了避免直接用從句放在句首作主語（因為這樣顯得頭重腳輕且太正式)，常用“the fact＋that-從句”這一結構作主語。如：

The fact that he has no girl-friends worried him a lot. 他沒有女朋友，這事使他很傷腦筋。

【注】在“the fact＋that-從句”這一結構中，that 引導的是同位語從句，其中的 that 不能換為 which。

3. 用于 in fact / as a matter of fact, 意為“事實上”“實際上”。如：

In fact, he didn’t come at all. 事實上他根本沒有來。

A：You must have told her about it today. 你今天一定把情 況告訴她了。

B：As a matter of fact, I haven’t. 事實上我還沒有。
